The Capybara Café

What Is a Capybara?

Capybaras are large, semi-aquatic rodents native to South America. Their bodies and behavior are closely connected to water and social group life.

The world’s largest living rodent

Adult capybaras are the largest living members of the rodent order. Their close relatives include guinea pigs and rock cavies.

Built for life near water

Their eyes, ears and nostrils sit high on the head, an adaptation that helps them stay aware of their surroundings while much of the body is in water.

Highly social animals

In the wild, capybaras commonly live in groups. Communication and social relationships are important parts of their behavior.

Our promise: We do not promise specific animal behavior. Animals are individuals and may choose to engage, explore, rest or take space.
